Season of plenty
What a summer it has been. The warm weather and sunshine of July brought with it the unusual gift of stress free silage and hay making. No looking over our shoulders for imminent rain clouds, just day after day of dusting off the tractor seat for another shift as the grass in our carse fields got cut and turned , baled and stacked. Just when things started to look a little parched the rain came - enough to wash in a little fertilizer and give the growing season an extra boost. With the sun on their backs and abundant forage the cows have never looked happier. Even Euan - aka Stumpy - our Aberdeen Angus bull who can sometimes be grumpy. Not known for his length of leg at the best of times I swear his belly is even closer to the ground than normal.
The summer growth has also worked its magic with our hebridean hoggs and we've finally got a batch in for butchery - looking back it's 2 years since we last had lamb boxes done so we are super excited to get restocked. With beef, lamb and pork all due back in the next week now is the time to book a box or let us know of any specific orders - Last order dates for boxes and couriers are:
Beef: Monday 24 August - midday
Lamb: Thursday 27th August
Pork: Tuesday 1 September
Elsewhere on the farm we've been busy welcome guests from all over to both the farmstay and our tasting tours - its been great to meet some super nice folks and I love how the community we have around the farm and our food extends across borders. We've got a project afoot with some renovations to the courtyard so this has been keeping Fergus happy with power tools galore and the joy of re-purposing of doors to new locations. It's been keeping me busy too trying to find new places to hide things behind as my temporary storage spaces keep getting exposed !
